Quirky-Cool Back to School Buys

Natural_markers_image The best part about going back to school is picking out the stuff that you'll go back with. Here, some ideas.

Natural Markers, Clementine Art ($5.99, shown). This set of four vibrant colors is made with plant and mineral pigments, so you're completely eco-friendly when you doodle all over your notebook.

The Perfect Notebooks, ecosystem ($10-20). Build your own notebook in one of six standout hues, and choose the style (advisor, architect, artist or author), cover (hard or soft) and size (S, M, L) too. Did we mention they're made of 100% post-consumer recycled material. Cuz they are.

Ponytail Love, Jack and Jane ($4.50). You know every day won't be a good hair day. Snag these cute ponytail holders, just in case.

Pretty Rabbit Canvas Tote, Forever 21 ($9.80). Fully lined with a magnetic closure, you can totally sub this in for a backpack on light book days, if you have those. (Also, this one's probably a little too disposable for school, but it's adorable -- and $1.50: The Owl You Need is Love Tote!)

PS-I can't resist one more tote recommendation. Remember these beauties?

Hurraw! Lip Balm

Hurraw-1It's no secret that we love lip balm. For no-nonsense beauty girls like Melissa and myself, a good balm is our go-to makeup product.

I'm excited to tell you about a brand I've just discovered: Hurraw! They're a small company in Whitefish, Montana, who have quite possibly perfected the right consistency of balm: smooth, not grainy, not sticky (but stays on your lips), tasty and super moisturizing. And for those of you ethical consumers, Hurraw! products are fair trade, organic, vegan and use raw ingredients. It's a lip balm with integrity.

I've tried out their new "beverage" line of Coffee Bean, Chai Spice and Green Tea -- each of them delicious. All Hurraw! balms are infused with real ingredients, so that means you're actually applying ground coffee beans, cinnamon and tea powder on your pucker. So far, my favorite "flavor" is Black Cherry, because it gives my lips a healthy pink glow.

At $3.79 each, I'd advice you to buy a bunch! Plus they come mailed to you in an unbleached cotton bag that you can fill with loose tea leaves for a herbal delight. I can't say enough good things, so: Hurray for Hurraw!

History Byte: Sister Suffragette!

06suffrage Hey, guess what? Today isn't just any other run of the mill Thursday -- it's Women's Equality Day. That's right, 90 years ago in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed, giving women the right to vote. It states: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." How 'bout them apples?

I feel dorky saying this, but whatever you may think, say or feel about this country, we were founded upon this important statement: "all [persons] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

In a day where a woman and a black man ran for the Presidency of the United States, it's hard to deny that the US is living up to its word. So, for all of you reading this who are over 18, don't ever forget to vote!

PS-The subject line is an ode to the song from Mary Poppins! Remember this?

Indie Crafter Du Jour: Body Language Soaps

Lip tint I'm big on slightly imperfect homemade cosmetics and bath stuff -- it's a weakness. Body Language Soaps uses natural vegetable oils and butters, herbs and botanicals, to make extra-green beauty products. Awesome.

Below, a few faves:

Pomegranate Pucker Lip Tint ($10, pictured). This pretty red that looks super-bright in its pot (and chicly sheer on your pout) enhances the natural color of your lips.

Charcoal Cleanser Clarifying Facial Soap ($8). This black-and-white swirly soap is made from activated charcoal and red moroccan clay, both of which help with problem skin!

Peppermint Foot Soak ($10). These cooling bath salts are the perfect treat for flip-flop feet (I see those callouses!).

Scared of commitment? Check out their selection of sample-sized goodies.

PS-Past Du Jour spotlights include Fleur Avenue and Bang Bang You're Thread.
